Here's how we're taking action in our community:

I realized that there are people in our community without food to eat so I decided to help raise money to help buy meals for needy families.

Here's how we got the idea:

My idea came from volunteering at the Second Harvest Food Bank at Izzy’s Corner. I had help sort oranges but choosing the good oranges and throwing out the moldy spoiled oranges. It felt good to help with the food boxes but I wanted to do more. So, I decided to make some back pack charms to sell and raise money to help feed the hungry. . Last year, I got to work the main warehouse floor for 4 hours packing boxes with dried goods for families. It was very tiring, but I felt good doing it. I also did a canned food drive at my school and collected 50 pounds of food to donate to the Food Bank.

These are the steps we took:

I signed up to participate in the Ripple Kids Fair at my school. Then, I spent most of my Spring Break and any free time I had making over 120 back pack charms to sell. My mom and dad helped me too. Some example of charms I made were: Minions, BB8, Disney Princesses, Minecraft, and Terraria. I sold the charms for $2, $3 or $5 each depending on how big it was and how many perler beads it took.

Here are some of the results:

My efforts resulted in raising $297 for the Second Harvest Food Bank. I donated through the “I Heart OC” giving event to increase the donated amount.

These are the people who volunteered with me:

One of the coolest things that happened during my project was:

This really cool thing happened where all my BB8, Terraria & light saber charms sold out and I was taking orders to make them for people who really wanted them. They were very popular. I know that my back pack charms have found many happy homes on student back packs and at the same time, it helped feed hungry people. That thought just makes me feel very happy.

One of the most important things I learned was:

I learned that it feels good to help others and that it is important that we do our part in helping feed the hungry in any way we can. Plus, it was SO much fun to make the back pack charms and sell them at the Ripple Kids Fair. I want to do it again next year!
