Here's how we're taking action in our community:

I collected used backpacks and school supplies at my school and at my sisters school. I did a collection drive for 2 weeks. I donated the backpacks filled with supplies to kids at the Boys and Girls Club in Tustin.

Here's how we got the idea:

We had extra used backpacks at our house and I wanted to donate them. I thought others might have used backpacks too.

These are the steps we took:

I met with the principat at my school to talk about my project and how I can do a collection drive.
I sent a flyer home to every student in my class and also announced my backpack drive over the loudspeaker at my school. I also had my sisters preschool put a notice in their weekly e-mail to families.
I decorated a large box for the collection drive.
I put the box in the front office at my school.
I checked the box during the week and brought the backpacks and school supplies home.
I shopped with my mom for more supplies.
I filled the backpacks with supplies.
I donated them to the Boys and Girls Club of Tustin on June 17 during one of their programs for their Little Rascals kids going into 1s Grade in the Fall.

Here are some of the results:

I collected about 70 backpacks and a bunch of school supplies to put in the backpacks.
At the Tustin Boys and Gils Club, they had a "get ready for school" program. Each child went through a relay, practicing waking up, getting dressed, brushing their teeth, eating breakfast, making their lunch, and getting their backpack to head off to school. They each got to choose a backpack from the backpacks I collected. They got to keep the backpack, filled with the school supplies.

These are the people who volunteered with me:

One of the coolest things that happened during my project was:

I was surprised about how many backpacks i got and that my Daisy troop donated $70 to my project so I can buy more supplies. It was cool to see how excited the kids were to choose a backpack at the Tustin Boys and Girls Club.

One of the most important things I learned was:

The most important thing was to never ever give up.
